Fun Stuff We Like to Do When We Have the Time

We like to read aloud to each other. So far we've read all the Harry Potter books together, The Hobbit and The Fellowship of the Ring, and The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. There's nothing as romantic as sitting together in front of a cozy fire, sipping some tasty beverage (be it wine or hot cocoa), and listening to one's spouse read a book. Now that we have moved to Lakeside, we don't have a fireplace anymore, so we just read to each other on the couch or sprawled out on the floor.

We are also fond of hiking and camping. We especially love driving out to the middle of the Anza-Borrego desert and just camping under the stars. Camping in the Laguna mountains is also fun, but there's just something about the barrenness of the desert that beguiles us. It's also a nice change to be able to see the stars at night. Here are some pictures of bighorn sheep that we saw on the Palm Canyon Trail in Anza- Borrego State Park in January of 2003.

Ever since we lived in Alaska, we've been fond of watching planes land. We'll park by the airport--if possible, directly in the flight path--and wait. In Maui, as in Anchorage, the planes would pass right over us before they landed. Their very loudness gave us a sense of the enormity of these flying, steel giants. Sometimes we would "sing down the planes" if we got impatient. (Under the guise of hastening the planes' arrivals, we would sing a Billy Joel song or two. In reality, it just helped the time go by faster, but singing made us feel like we were somehow summoning the planes.) Since we've been back in San Diego, we haven't spent much time watching planes land at Lindbergh Field, since we've both been pretty busy.

We've been Annual Passholders at Disneyland for the past couple of years. We love going to the "Happiest Place on Earth."

We also love to just go driving together. Sometimes we'll drive up to Julian just for the heck of it. We have itchy feet, I guess. Maybe it's some primal need for adventure that compels us to seek out windy mountain roads or new little nooks that we've never seen before.
