Our Daily Log

  • Friday, August 17th, 2001
Since we've been back in San Diego, we've really been too busy to maintain this log (as you can see). Also, since we're not in Maui anymore, we feel that what news that we do post should be differentiated from our tropical stint. So... we'll leave this up for you all to see our Hawaii pictures, but we'll (somewhat irregularly) keep you up to date via "The Poohoney Happenings" as to our whereabouts and activities.

  • Saturday, July 21th, 2001
Today we're paying a visit to my brother Daniel, who we haven't seen since we left for Hawaii. We're interested in renting the middle bedroom of the house we used to share with him, but it is pretty tiny. He has to check with his new roommate Tracy before making any decisions.
  • Friday, July 20th, 2001
This week has been a blur. This week we've made A LOT of calls on studio and one bedroom apartments. We've driven around and looked at the more promising options. Today, we looked at a room for rent on a ranch in Ramona. The air is enticingly clean up there. We also met up with my friend Liz and saw a matinee of Jurassic Park III. It was a lot of fun. Here's a shot of me in the local Starbucks. Although (just for the principle of it) we despise Starbucks as the McDonald's of coffee, we're hypocrites. What can we say?
  • Monday, July 16, 2001
Today we bonded with my siblings, Alex and Gio. My mom is giving us her old Saab, so that (after our truck arrives from Hawaii) we won't have to buy a second vehicle.
  • Sunday, July 15, 2001
Before catching our flight, we went snorkeling one last time and saw some great fish. Then did our final push and made it to the airport and onto our plane. Marianna picked up and we miraculously piled all of our luggage into her Saturn. Here are some of the final pictures we took this morning while still on Maui.

  • Saturday, July 14, 2001
Happy Bastille Day everyone! This morning we went one last time to Wowee Maui for lox bagels and frappuccinos. We also had one final chess-playing session. Mike one one game and I won one game. Other than that, today was mainly spent packing and reintroducing Piglet to his carry-on cage. He was less than enthusiastic, but hopefully (after years of therapy) he'll recover.
  • Friday, July 13, 2001
This morning we got up at three in the morning to go up to watch the sunrise at the top of Haleakala. It was incredibly beautiful but COLD. Today was also our last day of work at "The Mermaid's Dowry." In the evening we paid one last visit to the cats who live by Lahaina Harbor. This time we brought them some canned fish, which they liked. That was our day.
  • Wednesday, July 11, 2001
Ten years ago today, Marianna and I watched a total solar eclipse over Todos Santos, Mexico. Hopefully, no later than 2010, Mike and I will see our first total solar eclipse together. In 2010, there's one that goes over Easter Island that we WILL see.
  • Tuesday, July 10, 2001
Today we dropped off most of our earthly possessions to be shipped to the mainland. Our stuff was piled six feet high on two pallates and then wrapped in glorified seran wrap. Impressive. Wish us luck that the boat this is on doesn't sink, since the shipping company does not insure household goods. (Knock on wood.)
  • Sunday, July 8, 2001
Today is my friend Liz's birthday. Happy birthday Liz!
  • Thursday, July 5th:
As of today, we've decided to ship most of our stuff instead of selling it here. We've been looking forward not just to seeing our families again, but also to getting to go to Disneyland again. Yippee skippy!
  • Wednesday, July 4th:
Happy Fourth of July! Did you all recite the Declaration of Independence and embrace Romantic Nationalism via patriotic songs, sentiments, etc.? :-) We worked today and then watched Lahaina's fireworks show. It was really nice, even though the local birds didn't think so. They chirped annoyedly through the entire show. We went out to dinner at Lenny's instead of sitting in traffic to leave town.
  • Tuesday, July 3rd:
The highlight of our day today was avoiding yet another accident. Some lady (what is with my fellow women!!?) made an unprotected left turn on the highway right in front of us. This time, Mike managed to pump the breaks enough to keep them from locking up and he swerved. It would have been messy, but thank goodness it was okay. There's something about Maui that makes both drivers and birds alike just dive out in front of oncoming traffic, specifically when that oncoming traffic is us. Strange but true.
  • Monday, July 2nd:
Today I got my Lithuanian translation of Harry Potter in the mail. Sadly, I'm still waiting on the French translation (it's only been six weeks). Our friends Simona and Rolandas sent us a Lithuanian dictionary, but it also has failed to cross the Pacific thus far. We're moving back to San Diego in just a few weeks and it would be rather nice to get these books by then, so as not to have them sail right back to the Mainland. Sniff, sniff.
  • Sunday, July 1st:
Slight change of plans: Instead of waiting until the end of July to come back to San Diego, we'll be flying back on July 15th. Since Brian says that honest people are "zealots" or "fanatics," we're going to head back to where our kind are appWe're still not sure what will become of the better part of our belongings. To ship or not to ship. That is the question. We'll keep you posted. Today we also went to the beach and had a nice time.
  • Sunday, June 24th:
Today we broke the news to at least some of our folks that at the end of July or so, we won't work at The Mermaid's Dowry anymore due to some differences we have with Brian concerning business practices (but we're still on good terms with him). Instead of staying here in paradise, we've desided to make Mike's schooling a priority. This means moving back to California (namely San Diego) so that he can get resident tuition rates. He'll be going to to school full-time and I, for a change, am going to bring home the proverbial bacon. In our remaining month here, we'll try to take lots of pictures and do lots of fun activities so that we'll have no shortage of memories when we're old and gray.

In speaking of activities, today we went to Hana and to Oheo Gulch (the Seven Sacred Pools) with Brian. We stopped at a few beaches and waterfalls on the way. When we actually got to Oheo Gulch it was fairly crowded, but it was nice to go swimming in the pools and to soak up the warmth of the sun. After coming home, I made two cherry pies with cherries that I pitted yesterday. We'll have it for breakfast tomorrow. Here are some of the pictures we took today:

  • Saturday, June 23nd:
The hightlight of our day today was going to see the Disney's new movie Atlantis: The Lost Empire. We both liked it, but Mike liked the irreverant Shrek better. I, on the other hand, am bound by the Linguistics Majors' oath, which states that I must favor movies featuring linguists as heroes. In speaking of Atlantis, did you hear about the ruins of an underwater city that have been found over 2000 feet deep off the coast of Cuba? Who knows? Maybe Atlantis will someday move from the realm of mythology to history, just like Troy did after Heinrich Schilemann went and found it.

  • Friday, June 22nd:
Today we were at least semi-productive. I spent the better part of the day working on The Mermaid's Dowry web site. Slowly but surely, I'm losing my fear of Photoshop and of html-ing. Later on, we went up to Lahaina and Mike drilled the lock hole on the gate for the store. After that, we visited the harbor cats and they remembered us and let us pet them. They don't let just anybody pet them, so we felt special. We also walked up Front street and stopped by the Hard Rock Cafe. It brought back a lot of memories of when we were there on December 31, 1996. On our way back down Front Street, we took a picture of this statue of an old sea dog of a harpooner. Mike is always saying that it looks like our friend/employer Brian. That was our Friday night.

    Look! A hole!

  • Thursday, June 21th:
We spent today painting the store, but we made time for a walk to the harbor.  We were hoping to entice the resident cats to come out and visit us, but there were too many people around so they didn't come out.  Later on, we were lured into a store and bought a couple cute dresses with my birthday money.  It's so hard to spend money.  Ugh!  After a long day of work, we also went to Kahului and had Costco pizza, browsed at Borders, and finally came home.

  • Wednesday, June 20th:
We're still alive! Sorry for going so long without updating our log, but things have been busy. The last few weeks haven't been particularly remarkable. The highlights were picking up (and getting peed on by) a large frog, painting and renovating the second story of The Mermaid's Dowry (where we're going to live, working just downstairs), seeing the movies Pearl Harbor and Shrek, me turning 23 and feeling very old, and meeting some ferral cats that live by the Lahaina docks. Today also marked our first day of jogging. It was fun. Brian, our employer, arrived on my birthday from San Diego. Prior to that, we visited his dogs in quarantine every day. Also, last Saturday while at Wow Wee Maui Bagels, we saw a ton of Harley dudes drive into the parking lot. This shot only represents a little less than half of all the motorcycles that were parked there--the rest wouldn't fit into the picture. We haven't taken that many pictures of all these adventures, but here are a few:

  • Monday, May 28th:
Our Memorial Day wasn't terribly memorable. We just sat around, and later watched a movie. We yearned something fierce for Jiggers' spinach dip...
  • Sunday, May 27th:
We went to the beach again today. We enjoyed a footlong seafood sub sandwich (with extra tomato). Delish! It was really windy at the beach, but still as pretty as ever. Francesca made flashcards for learning lots of Spanish verbs. What nerdiness! When we eventually travel in Europe, then it'll come in handy. Here's a picture of a Harley Davidson we saw today. Considering that there are only 100,000 people on Maui, there's a disproportionate number of interesting and classic cars here.
  • Saturday, May 26th:
Memorial Day Weekend! In between thoughts of the beach and barbeques, let's all remember the million-plus Americans who've died in war...

In observance of the holiday, we took it upon ourselves to, what else - go to the beach! Mike took a beautiful shot of where we found ourselves today, in Ka'anapali Beach.
He got a great deal on some filters and lenses at a "Going Out of Business" sale at the mall. The beach shot was taken with a UV filter and (especially) a polarizeed lens - both Canon 37mm filters fit great on our fairly new Sony MD-90, which we also use to take photos for the inventory of the Mermaids Dowry.
Also, Mike went to use the W.C. and found himself face to face with a scorpion! Here is a photo of that, as well as a spider we met later on:

  • Tuesday, May 22th:
Not much work for me today - oops... Mike and Dave went to Lahaina to meet the designers of the store, to make some adjustments. After their return, we dived in to an extended game of Trivial Pursuit. Mike took a timer shot of the three of us:
  • Sunday, May 20th:
Today we went to the beach. Mike sunned and went swimming, while I worked on a painting. Here are some of the pictures Mike took today:

  • Saturday, May 19th:
We worked on inventory in the morning and early afternoon. Later, while at Costco, we got "The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe" on video. I'm so glad they're re-releasing the series - it's one of my favorites, so we had to get it! In the evening, we went to the Italian-American Club's annual dinner dance. I baked my famous Sour Cream Blueberry Pie for the occasion. (By the way, fresh blueberries are obscenely expensive here!) Anyway, there were about a hundred people there and it was a lot of fun. Even the Italian "karaoke" was, er, nice. We sat at the same table as Suzie and Mike, a very nice couple. Suzie's daughter just got a scholarship to USD (University of San Diego, for you non San Diegans).
  • Friday, May 18th:
Work, work, work. Today a bird flew into the window. At first we thought it was badly hurt, but it turned out to be okay. After sitting in a daze for a few minutes, it cocked its head and flew away. Tonight I finished putting together a Harry Potter jigsaw puzzle that I've been working on. Mike helped too.

  • Thursday, May 17th:
We worked uninterrupted by bugs today.
  • Wednesday, May 16th:
Our work-day was unremarkable. In the evening, however, the house was invaded by an exceptionally large centipede. That's one thing about Hawai'i--the bugs are plentiful and BIG!

  • Tuesday, May 15th:
    Another day of work...
  • Monday, May 14th:
    Today we worked.
  • Sunday, May 13th:
Happy Mom's Day, all mothers! Today we went with Dave to see "The Mummy Returns." It was like being on a ride. The special effects were really something. It was fun, even if not "deep."
  • Saturday, May 12th:
Today we went to the 'Iao Needle. It was windy and chilly. There was a wedding there and a guy came and blew a conch shell, letting all latecomers know to hurry up...

  • Friday, May 11th:
We worked all day. Here are some pictures of my first oil painting (which is in progress) as well as my newly acquired supplies.

  • Thursday, May 10th:
More work. Mike and Dave went out to shoot some pool tonight, while I played on the computer. After Mike and Dave got back, I still was playing taped episodes of "The Adventures of the Gummi Bears." They were sucked in and couldn't move, until I bravely turned the tape off (sometime later). Here's a picture of Dave, our roommate and coworker:
  • Wednesday, May 9th:
Nothing much happened today, besides work.
  • Tuesday, May 8th:
    Still more work.
  • Monday, May 7th:
Back to work. Mike and Dave went to Costco today, while I worked on inventory. I'm going to a meeting for the Italian-American Club of Maui this evening, which is exciting. Mike isn't going to join, but I'll be sure to drag him to all the club's special events.
  • Sunday, May 6th:
We went to the beach today. Later on in the evening, Mike and I watched planes land for a while. The moon is so bright... I guess it's the lack of smog around here.
  • Saturday, May 5th:
We worked on inventory today again. In the afternoon, we went to the mall and were looking at some art supplies to buy. Sadly, our adventuring was cut short because I got a really bad headache (it was a really bright day). I ended up having to come home and sleep it off. Mike was such a sweetheart, despite being abandoned on an otherwise perfectly good Saturday night.
  • Friday, May 4th:
We worked on inventory for the store today. We also spent the evening at Borders, taking turns working on the laptop, doing more inventory stuff. We bought a book called All About Techniques in Oils, since I'm going to finally start painting in oils.
  • Thursday, May 3th:
    Work, work, work. :-P
  • Wednesday, May 2nd:
    We worked.
  • Tuesday, May 1st:
Today we met Grandma and Barbara for breakfast before their flight. Then we went to the airport to pick up our co-worker Dave, who arrived on the same plane that Grandma and Barbara flew out on later on. We waited for Dave at the gate, but he ended up walking right by us without our noticing. A few minutes later, he called us on the cell phone and asked where we were. Everything worked out fine, at any rate. Mike took this picture of me while we were waiting to get a shot of Dave coming off the plane...

  • Monday, April 30th:
Today was kind of a wasted day. We went to lunch with Grandma and Barbara and were going to go to the beach with them, but ended up not going.
  • Sunday, April 29th:
Today we went with Grandma and Barbara on a "glass-bottomed" boat to this little island called Molokini to go snorkeling. Barbara did "snuba" (which is a cross between snorkeling and scubaing). Mike and I had a fun time snorkeling and saw lots of reef fish. On the way back to shore, we saw some humpback whales and sea turtles. It was a fun trip.

  • Saturday, April 28th:
We worked today, since we couldn't reach Grandma and Barbara to arrange a get together. An unremarkable day...
  • Friday, April 27th:
Tonight we went to the Old Lahaina Luau with Grandma and Barbara. The food was excellent and so was the dancing. Here are some pictures we took:

  • Thursday, April 26th:
  • Wednesday, April 25th:
Today we worked, worked, worked. We're had salmon for dinner and watched a Spanish film called "Lovers of the Arctic Circle."
  • Tuesday, April 24th:
Today we worked while Grandma and Barbara recovered from our long day yesterday.
  • Monday, April 23th:
We got up this morning at the ungodly hour of three o'clock and drove with Grandma and Barbara up to the top of Haleakala to watch the sunrise. Everyone spent so much time taking pictures that we missed the actual instant of sunrise. Then we drove to Hana and on to the Ohe'o Gulch (the Seven Sacred Pools). We had fish kabobs at a stand on the side of the rode, and Barbara drank coconut milk straight from the source. We continued to drive the rest of the way around the southern side of the island till we got back to Kahului, at which point we went home.

  • Sunday, April 22th:
Today we went around a bit with Grandma and Barbara. We went to Lahaina and saw the artists under the Banyan tree. Then we went to Whaler's Village on Ka'anapali Beach, since Grandma is interested in this young artist named Alexandra Nechita, whose works are being shown at the Dolphin Gallery there. Within no more than five years, I want to be painting well enough to earn a living as an artist.

  • Saturday, April 21th:
Today we didn't do much of anything fun. We put in a day of work and checked our mail later on. Oh, the thrill... Grandma and Barb wanted to spend the day recovering from their massive sleep deprivation, so we did our own thing.
  • Friday, April 20th:
Today, Grandma Julie and Barb arrived from San Diego. After they rented a car and checked out their condo, we all got some burritos at Maui Taco and ate at the beach. Then we went to the old lava flow down near LaPerouse Bay, later going to Denny's for a bite. Here are some pictures of their arrival and of us eating.

  • Thursday, April 19th:
Tomorrow my Grandma Julie and Aunt Barbara will arrive for a visit from San Diego. Today Mike and I worked on inventory for the store, at Borders - Where else? We also got more boxes from storage. Tonight was fairly clear and we saw so many stars... It was magnificent!
  • Wednesday, April 18th:
Today is my brother Daniel's 20th birthday. How did he get so ancient? Well, guess time only goes forward - unless you have a Delorean ;-) We also got a neat shot of the sunset...
  • Tuesday, April 17th:
MAIL!!! We finally got all of our mail forwarded from San Diego. It came in a big fat envelope and we sat in the car for almost a half-hour going through it all! Never take timely delivery of your mail for granted. We also drove into the hills above Lahaina and stopped by some cane fields near Wailuku. Here are some photos, thought we'd start making 'em a bit bigger - sorry to those on dial-up.

  • Monday, April 16th:
Um... Oh yeah! I got a book on learning guitar(I = Mike now, sorry!) and giving it a go. Sounding okay - I've got a lot to learn! Also bought a Hawaii drivers manual, to learn the about the wierd laws here so we can go take the written exam and pass with flying colors!
  • Sunday, April 15th:
Today we... worked. We thought about going to the beach, but it started sprinkling and wasn't all that warm. We've realized another great benefit of working: it's cheaper than going out on the town. Thus, besides the obvious monetary benefits, working more means spending less. This appeals to our frugal natures. Even though I suspect that it's some sort of sin to work on Easter, what the heck!

We also want to stick out our tongues and say, "Ha! Ha! We filed our taxes way back in January! How about you?" Also, Mike's been strumming his guitar lately. He modestly says that he's doing "okay" and that he needs to dig up his chord book. Time for dinner, gotta go. Here's a picture of Mike while he's on the phone with his family for Easter.
  • Saturday, April 14th:
Today we drove around... We went up to Wailuku Heights, where there are some multi- million dollar homes that are just stunning! The view was amazing!

We worked on inventory at Borders (on the laptop), tag-teaming. We took turns manipulating and organizing images (while sipping java), then taking breaks to browse. I'm always up for any excuse to hang out at Borders, even if it involves work. Mike, on the other hand, will work anywhere as long as he's allowed to work, work, work. Sounds pretty nuts, eh? ;-)

I also spent a little time looking at this African Grey parrot that I've got my eye on. He's really cute, but costs about $1,600. The other African Greys in that shop aren't so friendly, but "Kamaina" will stand on my arm and even said "Hello" yesterday. Apparently, Greys are slow talkers (although they eventually become the most verbal), so it's just a bonus if they say anything at all at this age.
  • Friday, April 13th:
All day long we numbed our minds doing inventory for the store. Then we stayed up past three watching the "Back to the Future" trilogy and eating overpriced "gourmet" delivery pizza. It's Pizza Hut for us next time... Since you're probably on the verge of throwing up at the thought of all this (oddly enough, we nauseate most people), we unapologetically plead guilty to the charge of being "children of the eighties"... :-D
  • Thursday, April 12th:
We've been inventorying and taking pictures of Brian's roof (for the roofers). Nothing very interesting... We also got more boxes from storage and stopped by the beach to take some pictures.

  • Wednesday, April 11th:
Where has all the time gone!!? Well, we've started inventorying all the antique store merchandise, gone to the beach, gone snorkeling, and pouted about the fact that our mail still hasn't been forwarded to our new post office box. Yesterday, we bought a digital camera. Now we can easily post pictures of ourselves until you (very quickly) get tired of looking at us.
  • Monday, April 2nd:
Today we secured a third storage space, finished unloading the shipping container-- putting in a good day's work. Now we can relax for a few days.
  • Sunday, April 1st:
Today we moved to our employer's guest house. Free rent. Nice...
  • Saturday, March 31st:
Today we unloaded most of the merchandise from the shipping container (the back part of a "semi" trailer) into storage. At first it looked like we wouldn't have any laborers to help out, but everything turned out okay. We drank a lot of soda and water. Later on, we went to the beach where we could see humpback whales breeching offshore. It was cool! In the evening, Mike went out with our friend Dave to play pool.
  • Friday, March 30th:
Today we ran a lot of errands! We got to check out Lahaina in the evening. It was a pretty happening place! We looked at the shops and even had fish and chips for dinner. It's nice how you can wear shorts here in the evening and not even feel chilly.
  • Thursday, March 29th:
Today we drove around the northwest part of Maui, retracing the path we drove by moped over four years ago, when we were last here.

Our last two pieces of luggage still haven't arrived and we won't be able to count them as officially lost until tomorrow. Then we'll have to itemize the contents of each to make our claim.
  • Wednesday, March 28th:
Today we checked on our luggage, which is still missing. We also drove around the island with Dave and went to the top of Mauna Haleakala, the world's largest dormant volcano. We watched the sun set over the clouds and it was incredible! We had pizza for dinner.
  • Tuesday, March 27th:
Today we saw the building on 113 Prison St. where The Mermaid's Dowry will be. It needs a lot of work! First its electric wiring will be brought up to code and then it will be remodelled. After all that, we'll be able to pull all the merchandise out of storage and set up shop.

Tonight we went over to Carla's for cocktails (she's the interior designer), where we met Margaret (the real estate agent) as well as Valerie ("Val", Carla's assistant) and her husband Terry. Dave also came and we all talked about everything that needs to be done for The Mermaid's Dowry.
  • Monday, March 26th:
Today we flew from Los Angeles to Honolulu and from Honolulu to Kahalui, Maui. In Honolulu, our pet chinchilla (Piglet) had to pass through quarantine before we could bring him to Maui. Always a healthy little rodent, he passed.

When we arrived in Kahalui, we found that two of our five pieces of luggage weren't there. These two pieces of luggage were boxes, one containing Piglet's brand new cage and supplies, and the other containing a scanner, our phone, and a lot of other stuff.
