"Margučiai" (pronounced mar-goo-chay), are an important part of celebrating "Velykos" (Easter) in Lithuania. According to Dr. Andrius Dundzila, they symbolize "the rebirth of nature, the creation of life, the birth of plants, and rejuvination in general." There are a variety of customs associated with marguciai.
Growing up in the United States, I only recently became acquainted with margučiai. I taught myself how to make both the marginti vašku (wax relief) and skutineti (scratch) eggs, looking at pictures in Lithuanian cultural books. I have faithfully reproduced authentic Lithuanian designs.
As an aspiring artist, I most appreciate margučiai as a beautiful form of folk art. That they are Lithuanian makes them even more special to me.
